SUNS of RA
“Rock and Roll Sounds”
SUNS of RA creates “Rock and Roll Sounds”, and was formed in August of 2006 by three former members of the band “Echelon”, which performed around the Denver area from September of 2004 until July of 2006. The trio takes its mythical name partly from the energy and mystery the musicians find in the powers of the solar orb, and their sonic influences also draw from nearly every form of ancient and modern music found “under the sun”.
Dorian Cornwell (drums/backing vocals), and Dave Myers (guitars/vocals), found each other through an ad in the local music pages. They shared an instant and remarkable rapport, and soon started a new band, convincing Abraham Willock (bass/backing vocals) to climb on board. After performing for two years as three-quarters of a four-piece band called “Echelon”, Dorian, Dave, and Abraham parted company with fourth member Craig Anderson (who now performs as a solo artist) and decided to form their own version of the classic power trio: SUNS of RA.
SUNS of RA performs high-energy, exhilarating rock and roll, as well as they create rich, delicate sonic palettes that affect the subtle moods of their environment. The band’s flexibility and improvisational skills blend well with their penchant for musical variety; all three members of SUNS of RA exhibit prolific compositional abilities and musical creativity. Interested in the living traditions of jazz, blues, folk, country, classical, and other timeless music, as well as American and British rock and roll spanning the last four decades, the musicians imbue their original material with a distinctly classic spirit, which they also exhibit in their interpretations of previously existing works. They enjoy showcasing some of the most remarkable examples of cultural and popular music through the large catalog of cover tunes they regularly perform.
There is a searching quality to the original work of SUNS of RA. It is a voyage through a strange land, wild and otherworldly. It is an invitation for the listener to journey across vast open spaces where the imagination can wander. Their electrifying rock sound is balanced by a narrative and poetic quality that is complex, soulful, and melodic.
SUNS of RA take inspiration from such artists as: Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Slayer, Beck, John Coltrane, Muddy Waters, Mogwai, Guns n’ Roses, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Mötley Crüe, The Ramones, Neil Young, J.S. Bach, Queens of the Stone Age, The Rolling Stones, the Misfits, The Clash, the Yardbirds, AC/DC, Charlie Parker, B.B. King, and Leadbelly.
