Over the past few years, Battery Park — j. Brown (vocals/acoustic guitar), Kevin Linderman (lead/rhythm guitar), Eric Best (drums/percussion) and Justin Gomes (bass) — has achieved a great deal of success. In 2001, the song, "Tell Me" was featured on a segment of VH1's ROCK ACROSS AMERICA, and they won the Jim Beam Unsigned Band Northwest Regional competition at the Hard Rock Café in Denver — going on to compete at the National Finals with four other bands from around the U.S.
All the while Battery Park has continued to gain a reputation as a great live act and have played several high-profile benefit shows, including the C.H.U.N. People's Fair. Founding band member j. Brown puts it, "My favorite time is being on stage surrounded by the rest of the guys and watching the audience react…it's amazing."
Brown continues: “Music has been one of the most important parts of my life... Both my parents were avid music listeners and musicians, and encouraged my brother, sister and I to get into music at an early age. I played the drums through high school and didn't pick up the guitar until 10th or 11th grade. I started singing because G, C, and D chords were getting boring and then I sang in a couple different cover bands in college. I didn't really get into doing my own thing until I moved to Denver. I tried jamming and singing with some bands in town, but it ended rather poorly, so I found some decent players on my own and called it ‘Battery Park.’ As soon as Kevin and Chaz came on board in the fall of 2000, it stopped being ‘my band’ and became ‘our band.’”
Guitarist Linderman reminisces of his meeting Brown, saying, ”After college, I tried to play music in a variety of cities and bands, but nothing really panned out. j. called me in response to an ad I’d posted, and since then it's been all Battery Park.”
The other members of the band also hail from outside the Colorado scene and just happened to have moved here at opportune moments. “When I moved to Colorado, I knew I had to find a way to continue drumming,” says Eric Best. “Luckily, I found Battery Park. It’s already proved a rewarding experience, as I not only play the beats I want, but have input into the song as a whole.
Bassist Gomes adds: “I was basically a jock, growing up in California, until MTV came around. My trophies and pennants were replaced with musical instruments… I play several instruments, but it wasn't till I picked up a bass that I discovered my musical voice. Some of my greatest life experiences have come from my bands in California, Oregon and Colorado… I feel very fortunate to have found a place in Battery Park.
Battery Park’s first full-length album is entitled "Scattered Pictures".
